About the Opera
Carmen is
an opera in four Acts by the French composer, Georges Bizet. Henri Meilhac and
Ludovic Halévy, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée, wrote
the liberetto. The scene of Carmen takes place in Seville, Spain during the mid
19th century.
Carmen, a
gypsy girl who works in a cigarette factory fascinated the soldier Don José
with her. José who was imprisoned for letting Carmen slip away from injuring
another factory worker, returned to the tavern. He confessed and can’t help
himself but to join the smugglers with Carmen.
José later regrets his action for joining Carmen’s smugglers group. José
left after Micaëla, José’s childhood friend inform of his mother’s ill
condition. Carmen is already in love with a bullfighter Escamillo by the time
José returns. Carmen perished as she continues to reject José’s love. José
stabbed her to death and he is then dumbfounded by his actions.
